Key Feature Deep-Dive

AMOLED Display
F7 MIP LCD (transflective) — excellent sunlight readability, very low power draw. AMOLED only on Fenix 7 Pro / 7X Pro as a premium tier option.
F8 AMOLED is the default on 47 mm and 51 mm models. True blacks, vivid maps, always-on mode. Solar edition keeps MIP for maximum battery life.

Trade-off: AMOLED wins indoors, at night, and for glanceable maps. MIP Solar wins on multi-day ultras where charging isn't possible. Fenix 8 lets you choose by variant.

Speaker & Microphone
F7 No audio output or input. Calls and voice commands not possible on-watch.
F8 Built-in speaker and mic enable speakerphone calls, Siri/Google Assistant commands, and audible alerts without pulling out a phone.

This is arguably the most practical daily-use upgrade. Taking calls mid-run or on a bike is genuinely useful, and it works for offline audio alerts too.

Dive Computer
F7 Waterproof to 100 m for swimming and surface water sports. No scuba or freediving tracking.
F8 Full dive computer: multi-gas support, no-decompression limit (NDL) tracking, safety-stop timer, freediving mode, and Garmin Dive app sync.

Fenix 8 effectively replaces a dedicated dive computer for recreational divers, consolidating two wrist devices into one.

GPS Accuracy
F7 Multiband / dual-frequency (L1+L5) only on Pro-tier models. Standard Fenix 7 uses single-frequency multi-GNSS.
F8 Multiband GPS ships on every Fenix 8 variant — no need to buy the Pro tier for precise positioning in canyons, forests, or dense cities.

Dual-frequency dramatically reduces multipath signal errors. Making this standard across all F8 variants is a meaningful levelling-up of baseline accuracy.

Health & Recovery
F7 Wrist HR, SpO2, respiration, stress score, HRV Status from overnight data.
F8 All of the above plus continuous skin temperature monitoring, enhanced HRV analysis, and improved recovery advisor algorithms.

Continuous skin temperature enables better menstrual cycle tracking, illness detection, and overnight thermal trends — previously exclusive to higher-end Garmin devices.
